The Optimedical critical care business is focused on portable instruments for measurement of time sensitive diagnostics tests such as, blood gas, electrolyte and metabolite analysis. These analyzers are primarily used in the emergency room, operating room, cardiac monitoring area and any location where time critical diagnostic testing is performed within the hospital setting.
The portable OPTI product line of blood gas analysers first came to the US healthcare market in 1995 under the name of AVL Medical Instruments, although AVL had been a leading company in the blood gas analyzer industry since 1967. To date the OPTI product line has established market positions throughout the world with an existing customer base of over 4,000 instruments already in use, with approximately one-third in the US. Revenue is generated through sales of new instruments and ongoing repeat sales of proprietary reagents to facilitate analysis.
The OPTI analysers utilise a sensor technology based on optical fluorescence sensors and the process of optical reflectance. The major advantages of this technology are its reliability and stability, which makes the technology superior to electrochemical based systems.
An experienced team of about 60 employees under the management of Alfred Marek, who originally pioneered this business while under the AVL Medical Instruments name, was transferred from Roche Diagnostics to Osmetech during April 2003. Osmetech will continue the development of new portable blood gas analysers, which will have significant technological and commercial advantages over other products available for point of care blood gas analysis.
